Switching from Android to iPhone

Want to move from Android to iOS? Apple offers a simple solution – the Move to iOS app, which lets you transfer data from your old Android phone to your new iPhone.

Switching from Android to iPhone

What to check before you start

  • Make sure Wi-Fi is turned on on your Android device.
  • Connect both devices (the Android and the new iOS device) to a charger so they don’t run out of power during the transfer.
  • For a faster transfer, you can connect the Android device directly to the iPhone using a USB-C cable.
  • Check that your iPhone has enough free storage for all the content you want to move (including files stored on a microSD card).
  • If you also want to transfer Chrome bookmarks, update Chrome on your Android device to the latest version.

1. Start setting up your new Apple device

Turn on your new iPhone and place it next to your Android device.
Follow the on-screen instructions to begin the initial setup.
When you reach the Quick Start screen, select Set Up Without Another Apple Device and continue with the steps shown.
In some cases, you may also be prompted to activate an eSIM card.

2. Start the transfer from Android

On the Apps & Data screen, select Move Data from Android.
Note – if you have already completed the setup, you will need to erase your iOS device and start over. If you don’t want to erase it, you can transfer the content manually.

3. Open the Move to iOS app on Android

On your Android device, open the Move to iOS app.
If you don’t have it installed yet, tap the QR code icon on your new iOS device, scan it with your Android camera, and it will automatically open the app’s page in the Google Play Store, where you can download it.

Once the app is installed and opened, follow these steps:

  • Tap Continue.
  • Read the terms and conditions, then confirm by selecting Agree.
  • Choose whether you want to share diagnostic data with Apple (Automatically Send or Don’t Send).
  • Tap Continue and, if prompted, allow location access.
  • Tap Continue again and, if asked, allow notifications.

If you connect your Android to the iPhone with a cable, a pop-up may appear. Before starting the transfer, you might need to adjust the USB connection settings on your Android device.

4. Wait for the code to appear

On your Apple device, tap Continue when the Move from Android screen appears.
A 6-digit or 10-digit code will then be displayed.
If a warning about a weak internet connection appears on your Android device, you can safely ignore it — the transfer will still work.

5. Enter the code on Android

On your Android device, enter the code shown on your iPhone’s screen.

6. Connect to the temporary Wi-Fi network

Your iPhone will automatically create a temporary Wi-Fi network.
On your Android device, tap Connect when prompted to join the network. Wait until the Transfer Data screen appears.

7. Select the content to transfer

On your Android device, choose the data you want to move — from contacts, SMS, and message history to photos, videos, files, folders, calendars, or settings. Then tap Continue.

Keep both devices close together and plugged into power until the progress bar on the iOS device shows that the transfer is complete.
Even if the Android device indicates that the process is finished, wait until it’s confirmed on your iPhone.
The transfer time will vary depending on the amount of data — larger amounts may take longer.

The following items can be transferred:

  • contacts, SMS, message history, call history,
  • photos, videos, albums, voice recordings,
  • folders and files,
  • display and accessibility settings,
  • email accounts, web bookmarks,
  • WhatsApp messages and media,
  • calendars.

In addition, some free apps available in both Google Play and the App Store will also be transferred. After the process is complete, you can download them directly from the App Store.

8. Transfer your phone number and SIM/eSIM

When switching from Android, you can also transfer your phone number along with your SIM or eSIM card to your new iOS device.
In some cases, the system may redirect you to your carrier’s website to complete the activation.

9. Finish setting up iOS

Once the progress bar on your iOS device shows that the data transfer is complete, tap Done on your Android device.
On your iPhone, tap Continue and follow the on-screen instructions to finish setting up your device.

Final steps

  • Check to make sure all your data has been successfully transferred.
  • Music, books, and PDF files are not transferred automatically — you will need to move them manually.
  • Apps you used on Android that aren’t part of the automatic transfer can be found and downloaded directly from the App Store.

If problems occur during the transfer

Do not use the devices while the data transfer is in progress. On your Android device, the Move to iOS app must remain open the entire time. If you switch to another app or receive a call, the transfer will stop and your data won’t be moved.

On your Android device, turn off features or apps that might interfere with the Wi-Fi connection — such as Sprint Connections Optimizer or Smart Network Switch.
Then go to Settings → Wi-Fi, press and hold each saved network, and remove it from the list. After that, try the transfer again.

If the issue persists:

  • Restart both devices and repeat the process.
  • Turn off mobile data on your Android device and start the transfer again.

If you need help after the transfer

  • If you can’t sign in to the Messages app after the transfer, or it isn’t working correctly, check your account settings and try signing in again.
  • If not all of your Android apps appear on your new iPhone, simply search for them and download them again from the App Store.
  • If only part of your content was transferred, or your iOS device appears to be full (even though the transfer didn’t finish), you will need to erase the iOS device and repeat the process. Before doing so, make sure the amount of data on your Android device does not exceed the available storage on your iPhone. You can check the available storage directly in your iOS settings.
